Tecoma 2
Set on two and a half acres on one of the remaining vacant sites in the Dandenong Ranges; this project stands as a testament to the determination of its owners, and as a statement of design by the architects.
Kingcraft took over this project at frame stage; with roofing partially completed and window & door frames installed without glazing.
Stage one was priority make-safe works. The frame had been untouched for 4 months, and weather was taking its toll. Double glazing was installed to the existing frames, and reinforced waterproof wrap was applied to all external frame areas, for weather protection and security. With the existing structure protected, a list of building defects was compiled and submitted to the VMIA – resulting in a maximum payout.
Stage two was to bring the build back to life. At its peak, the building sits 8.5 metres above ground. Over a 20-metre-wide building span, the terrain drops 6.6 metres. With a BAL rating of 29 and surrounded by forest, the end result is almost paradoxically a home filled with light and space.
Externally, Sugi-Ban charred timber cladding compliments the 3mm thick aluminium gable shrouds; a mix of BAL rated timber cladding at the entry and decking to the rear contrast beautifully with the corrugated side walls. Internally, 30-degree vaulted ceilings soar up to 6 metres in the kitchen, lounge and rumpus areas, allowing the light from the glazed gables to playfully dance across the plaster. Bold choices of colour & texture create interest in every room.
